#Coops4Kindness Campaign Exceeds it Goal

Across the United States #Coops4Kindness united co-op businesses, credit unions, and their communities to complete one million acts of kindness by the end of October, 2018. The movement not only achieved this goal, it exceeded with over 1.4 million total acts of kindness.

In an effort to help spread a message of kindness and bring people from around the world together to make the world a kinder place, Cooperatives for a Better World – a not-for-profit organization established to unite cooperatives around the world and promote the cooperative business model – championed a 2018 movement called #Coops4Kindness. This movement to spread kindness encouraged people to pledge kind actions and share their positivity on social media.

“What the world needs now is kindness,” shares Howard Brodsky, founder and chairman of Cooperatives for a Better World as well as founding cooperative CCA Global Partners’ co-CEO. “Today millions of people feel like they have no control over the negative events happening around them. But every person has the power to build a better world now with the number of kind acts they do each day. Imagine what the world would look like if every person did one act of kindness today – imagine what it would look like if every person passed on that kindness again tomorrow.”

Many well-known cooperative businesses, non-profits & associations have led with their support of the #Coops4Kindness campaign with their pledges for acts of kindness including CCA Global Partners, National Co+op Grocers, Blue Hawk, Organic Valley, the Cooperative Development Foundation, and the National Cooperative Business Association CLUSA.

Employees at CCA Global Partners have completed over 16,000 acts of kindness. They have completed volunteer hours, collected donations for local causes, and completed many everyday acts of kindness like paying for the next car in line at the toll booth, bringing flowers to a co-worker, and donating Jet Blue miles to a friend. The company also supports a workplace mentoring program for at-risk youth that many of the company’s Manchester, NH employees support.

The momentum set forth by these cooperatives has been harnessed by local co-op businesses across the United States. Cabot Creamery Cooperative shared 154,703 acts on behalf of 2,977 volunteers across the country, who logged hours on their Reward Volunteers system. The volunteer hours represent many different kind activities, from volunteering at food banks to pet rescue, volunteer fire departments, and building community gardens.

Another significant pledge has been made by Great Lakes Credit Union for 30,096 acts of kindness. Great Lakes Credit Union continues to show commitment to their Chicago community in a variety of ways, including: random acts of kindness, member appreciation events, financial educational events, budgeting simulations, and monetary donations.

These are but a few examples of the 1.4 million acts that people have completed thus far. With so much going on in the world today, the actions captured in #Coops4Kindness illustrate that each day provides an opportunity to reach out to someone and make a small difference.

“When each act of kindness, no matter how large or small, is added to the next we begin to build a better world in a big way,” said Brodsky.
